I was in a game where a player went to Fort Harbor, got the Skeletal Captain, waited a minute or so, and then picked up a lvl1 gold mine from the a barrel to the left of the pirate ship. Every time I've tried this, there's been nothing in the barrel. Is it random chance or is there some way to make sure I get the gold mine every time?

In 6.49, the chances for the Gold Mine to drop are 10%. We have changed this to 5% in 6.50. There are actually two barrels that drop the Gold Mine.

Ah, so I guess it's not a reliable strategy to make quick lumber. At least one of the barrels drops a mana pot (worth 1 gold) consistently, so there's some profit to be had there.
Guess he just got lucky.
