Remember when bookshelves played a big role in Fortress survival and people would mass them as their main source of tomes? Well now that the number of bookshelves a player can build has been reduced to 8 the importance of bookshelves has been drastically reduced. Most pros I see play only build 1 bookshelf so that they can focus on lumber more. But if there was an upgrade that increased the chance to create a book and or tome or the time it took to make a bookshelf was reduced maybe we could see more players using bookshelves or at the very least for the players who already make 8 they could receive a bigger reward. Leave thoughts and opinions

P.S another thing could just to buff them straight up with no upgrade

Great idea no idea why no one else came up with it earlier.

Also they don't support mercs!

Btw uprades could cost less books since i build them so late so I have no time to wait for the books to roll in.

so wtf? *Most pros I see play only build 1 bookshelf*

you've got to be kidding me... it means, they are not pros, they waste tons of lumber in the end.

oh yeah, *THERE IS ALSO A TACTIC THAT YOUR MAIN SOURCE OF LUMBER IS BY SELLING BOOKS FROM THE START*

rari..

if you say it makes sense to make bookshelves in mass..

you have obviously never done the calculations

in the time it takes to make 1 bookshelf you can make enough mills for TWO (if u don't agree u SUCK at lumbers imho) lvl5 mills + bookshelves can't be moved, mills can -> your ability to power build bookshelves is LOW, your ability to powerbuild mills is VERY GOOD.

booksheleves at start make sense then and ONLY then when you have no access to a mass-transmute-capable-hero (and pros always have that access cuz lvl11 is fuckin easy to get to)

books may be expensive to buy.. but in the end you only need 1800 of them and then you are stuck with a lot of cheap-to-sell crap

if you sell books in the beginning then end up buying them in the end.. that is the most inefficient thing i can imagine and you should slap yourself..

@123HELLO if you build them late then thats just another indication that you really don't need them any earlier..

in the end i think bookshelves could do with some upgrades/buffing but it isn't going to happen this week (and prob the next) unless one of you will take it up yourself.. cuz im gonna be really buzy these next few days

To start with, i fully agree that some form of buff is needed.

Secondly, i would not really recommend upgrading the bookshelves as a building. Or a very minor buff of ~1% chance of tome increase.

So. We need the upgrade to not be so uber that it is anywhere close to mass lumber milling, but to be WORTH GETTING with ~10 mins remaining presuming you have the room.

Something along the lines of ~300 wood cost to triple book production would certainly be interesting. 300 is an amount which will certainly take time if you built bookshelves asap. The bonus tomes "worth" 125 lumber a pop is pretty solid.

A large problem with bookshelves is that books themselves are worthless once you have all three upgrades seeing the selling value isnt worth it and neither is the tome %.

So what if 125 books also = 1 tome? they have a value of 125 lumber (sell for 62), so it sort of makes sense and makes them easier to use up.

To begin with, the 125 books = 1 tome sounds like a good start. I think they'd need another upgrade to make worthwhile. The only other suggestion i can think of

Make it a team upgrade, again, would suggest tripling book production, costs ~1000 wood. Or 2000 + ~30 gold for 5x books production to make it certainly worthwhile a thought for multiple people in 1 base and nightmare + air + invis attempts.

-late response

but, if you woudn't build many, why did nevo put a maximum of "8" bookshelves, not maximum of "1" if you are just gonna build 1.

~idiot

Firstly I think Nevo didn't put in a limit. Niwa did.

At the time alchemist wasn't that big. Mass transumatations to get hyper lumber mills and just mass buying tomes from shops wasn't as main stream (10 books at once wasn't made yet) and people were still going for the traditional lvl 6 mills. So spamming bookshelves and getting free tomes was way more efficient than the horrendous lvl 6 mill (today's hyper mill is lvl 7 btw).

Hope that helps mister quote "~idiot"

might do..

(i don't like the idea of a building that is basically only used to buy 3 books and serves no other purpose)

promise nothing..

(this will effect game balance + players are already overwhelmed with resources and spend most of it on tomes...)

Usually when I play with oufo, we kill etarnia without using any books from the bookshelf as there is no need for it. Thats why I think you should do something about it to make it more valuable and make above average players use it.
