My first attempt at a storyline for the fortress.
There was 1 infected betrayer, by luck he was killed.
The monsters found out by absense of betrayers communications with the hivemind.
Sadly all survivors have been drenched in the betrayers pheromones allowing monsters to find them.
Monsters start charging in minutes giving survivors just moments notice to set up strongpoints in the fortress.
Mission command has plans to nuke the fort if overrun and so the survivors who anticipated this have set their mind on surviving.
Spread through and around the fortress marines and specialists hope to be picked by a survivor and trust them completely hoping he/she/it(custom) is not a betrayer.
Marines not picked will hold their ground and be a good soldier, hoping paratroopers will save their bottoms.

Oh I don't know... Maybe...
THEY WANTED TO LIVE AND THEY THOUGHT FIGHTING IN A FORTRESS WOULD GIVE THEM AN ADVANTAGE OVER A FOREST OR SOME OTHER WILDERNESS THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
But hey that's just my thoughts.

In The Fortress, They Discovered some ancient artifact but some marines did something wrong then it triggered an invasion opening wormholes at the top, left, right, bottom and middle after seeing some unknown creatures the fortress defenders report it to the HQ then it got out of hand. unknowns are taking over the fortress, the HQ sent an rescue team to aid them. or if all else fails they will nuke the place destroying everything.
